Team Summit sent out Brett Moody and Phil Hansen to this competition, and both boys had a goal to make the qualifier round. With a field of 130 plus riders the competition was fierce! Not only did Phil Hansen make it through qualifiers he made it all the way to the final round. In the final round Phil put down his run with a few spins and some solid rail tricks landing in 8th place! Phil Hansen continued to dominate each run “he kept his runs simple yet consistent,” said Team Summit Coach Dillon Eagen, and Phil ended up with a top 10 finish at the Canadian Open at the age of 15.

Young alpine skiers from Summit County competed at the Breck Ski Resort on Peak 9 Saturday in the first race of the Summit Cup Race Series. A number of the participants were competing for the very first time.

AP PHOTO “The Summit Cup is all about fun rives and to provide an inexpensive way for . any young athlete to experience the joy of alpine ski racing,” said Team Summit Colorado executive director C. J. Julin.

“It was so great to see the smiles and determination on all the racers’ faces as they made their way down the course and across the finish line.”

Together with Team Summit Colorado, The Summit Foundation has been able to bring the series to local youth and surrounding communities for 35 years.

This past Saturday, coupled with host mountain Breckenridge Ski Resort, they were able to offer free entry and lift tickets for competitors. Races are designed to be a fun experi- ence for the young athletes and awards are given to the top 10 individ- uals in each of five age groups. Boys’ and girls’ age groups are 6-and-under,

7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14-year-olds. Past winners of this event include former US Ski Team members and Summit County locals Jason Rosener,

Jake Fiala and Casey Snyder. “The Summit Cup Race Series is a

great event for Summit County and the ski race community,” said Jerry Karl, development head coach for Team Summit and race organizer. “We all owe a big thank you to The Summit Foundation for sponsoring this race series.”

The Summit Cup Race Series con- tinues March 10 at Keystone Resort. It will be the annual parent/child race that is a fun event for all families that want to join in.

There is a free webinar for parents being offered by USSA Sport Education next week, February 1, at 7:00pm mountain time. The goal of the webinar is to give parents a greater understanding of the long-term development of a ski racer and how they as parents can support their children along a path aimed at success in the long run. It is a multi-sport presentation, so programs with multiple sports can encourage non-alpine participation as well.

The webinar does have limited seating, and pre-registration is required to get access to the live presentation where parents may ask questions. A recorded version of the presentation will be posted shortly after and available to everyone.

Here is the link to register: http://ussa.org/news/free-parent-webinars-getting-most-your-skier-or-snowboarder
