Team Summit Coaches

Jerry Karl

On snow background:
Started racing in Michigan at age 13. Raced Central USSA from 15 to 18 years old. Began teaching skiing while going to college. Raced professionally in the Puegot tour and I Love NY series until I took up triathlons. Continued to ski recreationally and took up snowboarding while working in the Corporate world. In 2002 moved to Colorado and began teaching skiing at Copper Mountain. Taught for 3 years and achieved PSIA Level 2 certification. Started coaching with Team Summit in 2004 and became the Development program head coach in 2006. Continue to have fun skiing and racing throughout the winter months.

Your history of working with youth and coaching:
Have been working with Team Summit since 2004 starting as a Devo Coach at Keystone and then coaching the Age Prep group since 2005. Have taken certified coaching courses along with USSA level 1 coaching clinics.

A brief description about yourself that makes you stand out from the rest, and some of your coaching goals:
I am an extremely competitive individual that has enjoyed racing professionally in both Ski Racing and Triathlons. I understand the type of commitment it takes to get to the top of multiple sports. I understand the necessity of making training fun while helping our young skiers learn to develop new skills. It is my goal to help our young skiers develop independence and a love for the mountains while learning to ski the entire mountain confidently and successfully. It is my belief that these all mountain skills, that our athletes develop, are key to their success in ski racing and their life-long love of snow sports and the mountains.

What do you like to do outside of skiing/riding that makes you a better coach:
Outside of skiing I love to golf, sail, bike, run, ride motorcycles and swim. I am self-taught in nearly all of these sports, which allows me to understand how to pass on to others, what is required by them, to succeed. Racing in skiing, biking, road races, and triathlons helps me understand what our young athletes need in order to race at peak performance levels while having fun!
