Intro to Snowboard athletes are offered the choice to participate in 4 Summit Cup competitions. Summit Cups are held on Sundays throughout the season and are open only to introductory-level athletes. Competitions provide the perfect opportunity for your athlete to experience various competitive disciplines. All four Summit Cups are held on Sundays, so they do not conflict with the regular Saturday training schedule. A week or two prior to each Summit Cup, we open registration and distribute the Fact Sheet. The Fact Sheet contains all logistical information for the upcoming competition.

Snowboard 101 competes in the USASA Rocky Mountain Series and does not typically travel outside of Summit County.
At the end of the year, the athletes may earn the chance to compete at the USASA nationals, in which, we will offer a chance to extend the athletes' season and compete at Nationals with the rest of the Team Summit Athletes.
When is my athlete ready to move on to Snowboard 201?
Your athlete’s coach will be your main point of contact throughout the season! They know your athlete best and will be able to tell you if/when your athlete is ready for 201. This allows kids of similar ages to be in the same program and ensures that everyone’s skills are closely matched throughout the year by keeping them on the same schedule.
Snowboard 201 is divided into two divisions of snowboarders, park pipe and freeride. The curriculum of both groups is the same and the snowboarders will often work together and have significant overlap. Having a sub group allows the snowboarders and coaches with similar motivations to work together.
Park Pipe is for kids who are motivated to learn tricks in the parks and pipes. Kids enrolled in 201 Park and Pipe will still train for the local boardercross races and spend time learning to be competent snowboarders in all types of terrain.
Freeride is for kids who are motivated to be better in the boardercross course and freeride terrain. Kids enrolled in 201 Freeride will still train for the local Slopestyle and Halfpipe competitions.

Slopestyle, often referred to as slope, is a judged event where the rider performs tricks on jump and rail features. Every venue is different and the rider is free to perform their tricks however they see fit. The board must stay attached to the athlete, helmet must be buckled, and the rider is not allowed to leave the venue. Within the parameters of those 3 rules the rider will be scored and ranked based on their creativity, difficulty, execution, amplitude, and landings on the features.
Halfpipe is the name of the event and also the only feature in the event. Riders are judged on their overall impression as they perform multiple tricks from the top of the halfpipe to the bottom. Their overall impression score is based on the difficulty, execution, amplitude, and landings of all their tricks together.
Boarder Cross is a race where 4 snowboarders go down a course at the same time. The course is made up of jumps, berms, and rollers. The riders compete in heats like a bmx race. Usually the top 2 riders in a heat move on to the next round and the bottom 2 are eliminated. This process continues until there are only 4 riders left and those riders take places 1-4 in the last race.
Rail Jam is a judged contest on rails only. Riders have 15 minutes to hike and hit as many features as they can. There will be multiple slide features and the riders will be scored and ranked on difficulty, execution, and landings on all their tricks in the 15 min time period.
Athletes navigate a Black Diamond run and are judged on: line (how difficult of a line they choose), fluidity (how smoothly they can make turns), control, technique (balance, pole plants etc.), air (use the natural terrain to get controlled air and tricks…like a grab), and style. Big mountain events get an inspection only (no practice) on the day of the event. There is Typically a 1 run qualifier and a 1 run finals.
