Nordic Update | 2/1/2023

A week with not much racing at home. The older athletes are getting ready for next weekend's RMISA and RMN races in Steamboat.   At the junior world championships, we had Nina Schamberger racing and did a great start to the championships.   Vail Daily ran a pretty big article about the races: https://www.vaildaily.com/news/cloud-city-sensations-leadville-locals-nina-schamberger-and-rose-horning-are-set-to-compete-at-the-fis-nordic-junior-world-ski-championships/   In her first race of the championships, Nina skied to 19th place which was second American. This was...

Big Mountain Skiing Update – 1/30-2/5

That was a pretty darn productive couple of days at Copper, but with that being said; we're going to return to Abasin.  The traffic and frustration that comes with it, is simply too much and it severely cuts into our training time.  Ultimately, more time on snow is always a good thing – and all of the athletes that attended this weekend got to put eyes on the venue at Copper.  Abasin simply allows us to get more runs, and keep a cooler ahead. I'm also going to have to make a last-minute change to our schedule this week, and eliminate Academy/Early Release training...

Team Summit results from Superqualifier at Soldier Hollow Jan 20/21

Team Summit Nordic had a great weekend of racing in Soldier Hollow, Utah. This is called a "superqualifier" event – which hosts the entire western US racing at the 2002 Olympic venue. We had 23 athletes competing at Super Qualifier, which also counts as a Junior Nationals qualifier for U16 and older. Elsie Robinson won the U14 classic race, and we had Lucia Taylor, Maeve Niemkiewicz, and Fia Niemkiewicz also finished on the podium. Below are the results from the skate sprint and classic mass start races.   Lucy, Elise, Cooper, Heidi,  and Marin Fia, Lucy, Maeve,...

Big Mountain Skiing Update – 1/23-1/29 & Comp Season

We're nearing the end of January somehow.  This is our last week of "normalcy" before things get pretty chaotic, with competition season right around the corner.  We've been hard at work during training, gearing up for the road ahead and putting the finishing touches on most of what we'll be able to bring to the competition season. It looks like we'll have pretty consistent light snowfall for most of the week, hopefully keeping things soft.  The new snow will bring some additional crowds up the hill, so be prepared. Schedule We'll be moving back...

We are nearing the halfway point of the season.

Hey Team, We are nearing the halfway point of the season.  It goes by so fast and the second half is always better than the first half.  Skills and confidence are starting to creep up and contests are in full swing.  Thank you to everyone who makes the season happen.  Coaches bring enthusiasm, patience, and motivation every day, volunteers keep the wheels turning at our events, and parents keep getting the kids healthy snacks all season long.  Everyone has an important part to play—many thanks to everyone. In this update, you will find the following: USASA...

Big Mountain Skiing Update – Comp Info

Below are some points I would love to share and make known, to aid in some understanding, hopefully. The Rocky Mountain Division has over 700 athletes; this is about 2.5X larger than the subsequent most significant division in the US and Canada. Events (and the addition of days) are at the sole discretion of the event hosts (i.e., the mountains), and NOT IFSA or RMFS. The IFSA earns only $6 from each event registration.  The registration platform takes roughly a 9% tax.  The rest of the registration fees go to hosts and host resorts. The Rocky Mountain division...

Nurturing the Next Generation: Team Summit's Little Vikings Ski Program

Team Summit's Little Vikings program has been in full swing since last week. It is a "learn how to ski" program for our youngest skiers. With support from the towns of Breckenridge and Frisco, we can provide the best nordic skiing experience for our younger generation. The Little Vikings ski weekly at Frisco Nordic Center and Gold Run Nordic center in Breckenridge. The little skiers are learning the basics of cross-country skiing and developing new skills which will benefit them in the future. Having fun, enjoying the outdoors, and being active are the main goals...

Athlete of the Month – December – Stanley Buzek

Athlete of the Month – December – Stanley Buzek – Alpine FIS “Stasz” is always the first to lend a hand. Whether it is to help with rolling nets to allow a groom of the venue or take a bundle of gates from the coaches to return to the top after training on a cold and snowy day, he is supportive of his teammates and humble in his accomplishments, Stanley was the top performing athlete in his birth year at the Technical Nor-Ams in Beaver Creek skiing into the flip 30 from the 80th start position and scoring points in 23rd in his first Nor-Am SL start. &n...

Athlete of the Month – November – Hannah Webb

Hannah Webb  – Big Mountain –  November 2022   Hannah always shows up to dryland with smiles, a positive attitude, and a willingness to work. She is a great teammate to have around in the gym. She not only pushes herself but encourages her teammates to push themselves. She has made significant progress in a short amount of time and is quickly becoming a solid leader in the weight room! Way to go, Hannah!

Big Mountain Update – 1/9-1/15 *WITH WEEKEND TIMES

There's a bit more snow in the forecast.  While the heaviest amounts won't be around our parts, it looks like some of our future destinations will continue to pick up a fair amount of snow.  The skiing is coming around, but there's still plenty of danger. This past weekend we saw some bigger airs open up, but it's still Colorado in early January.  Please always scope the landings before hitting any airs.  This is the time of year where any injuries likely will result in missing competitions, so let's keep the fuzzy side up out there. Schedule 1/10 Tuesday...
