Team Summit Alpine Update – October 10, 2023

Dear Team Summit Ski Racing Devo | Comp, Age Class and Ability Parents; All Ability Athletes; Alpine Coaches:

Consistent cold nighttime mountain temperatures and snow forecast later this week are keeping the start of Age Class and Ability on-snow training on track for October 20! Please consult your Playmetrics calendars for details and be sure that you have your notifications set to receive any alerts, chats or mail messages in the way most convenient for you.

Ski Racing Devo | Comp calendars will be uploaded soon to Playmetrics now that the race calendar has been finalized by Rocky Mountain Division (RMD).

Season Pass information has not been received from our host resorts. As soon as it becomes available, you will receive a message from membership@teamsummit.org with information how to proceed with your purchase. Those who’ve purchased Ikon Passes and will be training at Copper during the Early Season Training Program will receive information about how to add the early season access to your pass for lift access before public opening.

Equipment

Many of you are receiving your new equipment for the season and are beginning to ask about set-up and tuning. See below for detailed information.

ImPACT Testing

Team Summit requires all athletes 12 and older to complete baseline Impact testing. ImPACT Testing creates a baseline to be able to use for return to sport protocols for any athletes suffering a concussion. As young brains are developing rapidly, it is important for testing to be administered annually.

Testing will be offered throughout the day during Team Summit Family Orientation on November 11 https://teamsummit.org/events. Additionally, U14 Alpine testing is scheduled for October 28 at 11:00 AM. Please see the attached information sheet for more information, requirements, costs, etc.

Skiing in College

US Ski and Snowboard is offering a Webinar for anyone interested in learning more about opportunities to continue to compete after High School. This is sure to be of interest to all Ability athletes and may also be interesting to parents of younger athletes. See below for registration information.

Please read on below for more important information! Reach out to your Head Coach or other contacts below with specific questions.

We're looking forward to seeing all of you on snow soon!

Equipment Set-Up and Maintenance

Once you have received your equipment for the year you will have to set it up for the best performance. Skis need to be prepped and boots will need to be fitted. U16 and older athletes will need to have their alignment checked by Ability coaching staff. Detailed equipment set-up recommendations are found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1c0xASjf5mhn9Xq263yQtE3rmIHifEYL8/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=101737236662125019540&rtpof=true&sd=true

As a parent, the most impactful support you can provide your athlete is to ensure that their equipment is “race ready” for every training session. That means daily ski prep for sharp edges with waxed and scraped bases. Most young athletes don’t have the attention to detail, dexterity or strength to learn to do this work before their U16 years. It can be a tremendous benefit to the athlete to have a parent tuning their skis or daily professional service all the way through their racing years.

Improperly tuned skis will not allow the skier to progress at their fastest possible rate when their movements do not get the proper response from their skis! Tuning is the single most controllable progression and performance variable.

A full new ski prep including shaping sidewalls, setting base and edge bevels and several wax cycles to condition the bases need to be completed before skiing. Many of you already know how to do these things yourselves or work with a shop who provides these services. If you would like to learn how to do this initial set-up and season long maintenance yourself, here is an excellent set of easy to watch 2-5 minute videos covering all the basics of ski set-up, tuning and waxing: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzAX1hV85KGqPey0XXcsKm8_0ffvY3zod

Our partner shops; Podium Sports in Frisco and A Racer's Edge in Breckenridge and for our front range families, Denver Sports Lab in Golden offer an extensive menu of tuning services including new ski set-up, individual full tunes, edge and wax and multi-tune punch cards.

Please contact or visit the shop most convenient for you to get quality tuning services for Team Summit Alpine Athletes.
