Alpine Updates – November 16th, 2020

Dear Team Summit Alpine Community:

We remain blessed by both the snow conditions and the extraordinary support of Copper Mountain Resort to be able to provide great training opportunities to our Ability Class and Age Class teams. With many athletes notching 15 days or more, there are few athletes in the country who have been able to ski as much.

The US 2020-21 Ski Race season began today with the 2020 US Women's National Championship GS at Copper. Congratulations to Team Summit's Olyvia Snyder who finished 25th in her first National Championships!

With COVID surging and increased community restrictions, it is imperative for all of us to be increasingly vigilant and committed to following the protocols that help us all minimize the risk to ourselves, our friends and families and the community. Our season depends on it!

  • Stay home when not feeling well
  • Masks on whenever not skiing
  • Maintain 6’ of separation at all times
  • Wash hands often

Be well, stay healthy and happy!

Early Season Training November 24-30 for Ability and Age Class Teams
Thanksgiving Break next week is Tuesday, Wednesday and Thanksgiving Day. No training is scheduled. Enjoy the break with family!

IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO PLAN FOR TRAINING EACH DAY, EVERY ATHLETE MUST INDICATE THEIR INTENT FOR EVERY DAY AND EVERY SESSION THAT IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THEM TO ATTEND ON THE SIGN-UP SHEET.

Responding to this survey is not a guarantee that you will have a spot in a session you have expressed interest in. If a session is not available, and you have not indicated other sessions during that day, you will not be scheduled for training. For this reason, it is important that you indicate your interest in EVERY session that you are available to train.

Once we receive our assigned training lanes for the day, we will assign groups in the most efficient way possible and communicate the detailed schedule in the nightly update.

The sign-up sheet for November 24-30 is open. The deadline for sign-up is end of day, Sunday November 22. It will not be possible to make individual changes after the deadline.

Tuning Instruction
I’ve heard from many of you who enjoyed the Tuning Clinic offered by Daron Rahlves this weekend and some who missed it and hoped to be able to review a recording. Unfortunately, Daron offered his clinic as a live event only and did not record the transmission.

Fortunately, there are excellent instructional videos available to help you learn how to tune equipment like a professional!

When kept up with daily, a proper ski prep can be completed in 15-20 minutes per pair. Here is a short 4 min video illustrating the required daily maintenance:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djWIzLOCANc&list=PLzAX1hV85KGqPey0XXcsKm8_0ffvY3zod&index=5

For those of you who are inclined to learn everything from setting up an efficient workspace to proper use of a rotobrush, here is a great series of easily digestible videos with the A-Z of ski race tuning:

Video Platform
The platform that we have been using for distribution and archiving of video (Hudl Technique) has ceased supporting its software and it has stopped functioning. We have been researching available products and will be making the switch to Sprongo. Founded by a former ski racer, Sprongo will provide user accounts to all Team Summit Ski Racing athletes in exchange for consulting and product development help that we will be providing. This offer will be good for the 2020-21 season only. If we continue to utilize Sprongo in the future, there will be a monthly subscription cost. More details will follow in the next several weeks.

In the meantime, we will continue to temporarily post videos to Google Drive. Please save any videos that you wish to archive to your own device or cloud storage. Google Drive videos will not be transferred to Sprongo once the switch is made.

World Cup Video
Watching World Cup video is a powerful learning tool. Take some time nightly before going to bed to watch a few of your favorite athletes to prepare for the next day’s training.

A sampling of skiers and disciplines from last year’s World Cup races are available for you to view and download here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Wa7qGxh2WhsXIb_-bWpz5wWN3TqJAV3c?usp=sharing

Race Season Travel
Due to the risks associated with sharing indoor spaces including vehicle transportation, there will be no organized team travel for this season.

Most races will be scheduled as single day events with multiple races. The smaller fields (Maximum of 100 competitors) will allow up to two 2-run races or four 1-run races. In many cases, this would either eliminate or reduce the need for overnight lodging and restaurant meals.

The dates for competitions have been input into the respective team calendars. Many locations are TBD awaiting resort approval and assignment by RMD. You can find the Team summit calendars here: https://teamsummit.org//members/calendars
