Mountain Biking Essentials

What to Pack for a Successful Ride

Team Summit loves being outdoors—it’s in our nature. From changing weather to mechanical issues miles from the trailhead, preparation matters. So we asked our MTB Director what he carries on every ride, whether it’s a quick after-school lap or lining up for the Firecracker 50.

Here’s what he had to say:

Type of Riding

Cross-Country, Adventure Riding, and Endurance Riding

Bag Type

Hydration pack (typically a 2–3L bladder) with enough room for extra layers, snacks, and ride essentials.

What’s in the Pack?

  • Phone
  • Multi-tool
  • Spare tube
  • Tire plugs
  • Mini pump or CO₂
  • Lightweight jacket or vest
  • Homemade Rice Crispy Bars
  • Sunscreen
  • Small first aid supplies

What’s in or on the Bike?

  • 2 bottles of Skratch (Watermelon or Mango)
  • Flat repair kit
  • Tire levers
  • Bike computer

What Do You Always Add for Bigger Rides?

  • Extra bottle of hydration mix
  • Peanut butter pretzels or another salty snack
  • Additional Rice Crispy Bars
  • Arm warmers or a light layer, depending on the weather
  • More calories than I think I’ll need

Pro Tips from the Trail

If you’re sweating, add a hydration mix to your bottles and replace those electrolytes. Fuel early and often—it’s much easier to stay fueled than it is to catch up once you’re behind. Don’t underestimate the power of positive self-talk during a hard ride. Find a phrase, song, or mantra that keeps you moving. Mine are:
“Just keep spinning, just keep spinning.” “I eat climbs like these for breakfast.”
You’re more capable than you think you are.

One Non-Negotiable Item

Homemade Rice Crispy Bars, pancakes—basically anything food-related, haha. A post-ride coffee and pastry always hits the spot, too.

More Than Just a Ride

At the end of the day, mountain biking is about adventure, problem-solving, and spending time outside with great people. That spirit is at the core of Team Summit’s MTB program. Through rides, races, camps, and community events, we help athletes build skills, confidence, and foster a lifelong love for the outdoors. If you’re interested in joining the Team Summit MTB community, be sure to explore our programs and events. We’re always excited to help more riders discover where bikes can take them.
