Team Summit Alpine Update – Ability Team – November 21, 2023

Dear Team Summit Ability Parents; All Ability Athletes; Ability Coaches:

Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving and fulfilling time with family and friends!

It has been a hectic fall so far with the delay of training in October and nearly daily changes to our planned training schedule. THANK YOU for your flexibility and keeping up with plans via Demosphere!  With your help we have been able to stay reasonably organized and have had productive training. Please join me with a BIG THANK YOU! to Copper Mountain “The athlete’s Mountain” for their extraordinary support!

The Ability training calendar and U16 / FIS racing calendars are current through January 29, 2024. As always, please indicate whether you will be “Attending” or “Not Attending” for every training or racing event. Note that some competition events are gender specific. Please sign up for the correct events!

Entry to all USSS Rocky Mountain Division (RMD) races is via SkiReg. New procedures for expressing intent and procedures for selection to Nor-Am and camp quotas are still a work in progress. Please see below for additional information.

Finally, please see below for URGENT information regarding the Birds of Prey World Cup Super G in Beaver Creek, Sunday December 2nd.

Please read to the end of this message!

New Race Entry Procedures for RMD Events

Registration for all USSS RMD Events is at skireg.com. Please create a FREE account to simplify your race entries. To find races, from the home page at skireg.com, choose "Alpine" from the "Event Calendars" tab. Once on the Event Calendars page, select "Rocky Mountain" from the "Event Location" drop-down and then click on the "Search" button to view all RMD events.

If an event is not open for registration, it has not been validated by USSS yet. Please check back periodically to complete your registration once it is open. *Sync races at Aspen and Winter Park and the Holiday Classic in Steamboat are accepting registrations. The Colorado Ski Devo Cup in Vail is posted but not accepting registrations yet.

Athletes will not be allowed to register unless their membership is current with U.S. Ski & Snowboard. The athlete’s name needs to match exactly what is in the US and/or FIS database. Ex: Jonathan Jones in the FIS database can't be registered as Jon or Jonny because it would not pull a match from SkiReg.

Service fees will be added to each entry fee and will be paid by the person registering. Service fees are not refundable.

The Race Announcement, once posted, will be available here: https://usskiandsnowboard.org/sport-programs/regions-divisions/rocky-central-alpine-region/rocky-alpine-division-calendar. PLEASE read carefully and act on all items for registration, waivers, etc.

Team Summit Coach expenses for Ability races are divided among attending athletes and will be billed after the event to the athlete accounts. A complete accounting of the expenses and individual billings will be provided after each race series.

Expressing Intent and Selection to Nor-Ams and Other Major Events

Intent is expressed by registering for the event in SkiReg. You will need to submit payment information that will be charged once you’ve been selected for the event and the period to edit or withdraw your registration has passed (generally 16 days before the first Team Captains’ meeting).

Once the ranking has been made you will either be on the list of registered athletes or a “Pending” list. Unless you remove yourself you will be considered confirmed and your card charged on the established deadline date.

If you are on either the registered list or pending list and you have had a change of plans, please remove yourself before the confirmation deadline to ensure you are not charged. If you are on the pending list and spots open up you will be added to the registered list and your card will be charged immediately.

There may be an opportunity to receive a refund after the lists are finalized but under no circumstances will the service fee be refunded.

*As of this message the Copper ranking lists are completed. All women who submitted their intent are registered. Men have a ranked pending list that is the order in which any open spots will be filled.

**Beaver Creek ranking lists are currently being worked on. Please save any questions until they are finalized.

Goal Sheets and Reviews

Thank you to all athletes who’ve submitted their completed goal sheets. The Ability Coaches have found it very helpful to have detailed insight into your goals and dreams! The deadline for scheduling and completing goal reviews with your coaches passed yesterday. However, anyone who still wishes to schedule an in person or Zoom meeting to review your goal sheet may reach out to do so before the end of the month.

Tuning clinic at Podium Sports

Ski preparation is the lowest hanging fruit to support athletic progression and racing performance! Properly set base and side bevels and daily sharpening of edges is critical to learning new skills.

Podium Sports is providing a ski tuning clinic on December 2, from 430-600PM. This is a great opportunity to learn and improve on your existing knowledge of ski prep.

Birds of Prey Course Crew

Team Summit has the opportunity to participate on course crew to help with slipping during the World Cup Super G in Beaver Creek. All FIS and U16 athletes are eligible. Race sharp "Rock skis" will be needed. Course access, lift ticket, breakfast and lunch will be provided.

This is a great opportunity to experience the World Cup from "inside the fences" while helping slip the course. Please indicate "Attending" if you would like to serve on the slip crew. Please indicate "Not Attending" if you will be taking the day off or attending to watch the race from the stands.

Athletes must be prepared to do high speed slips in between racers on a short interval on a steep and icy Super G course.

PLEASE CONFIRM YOUR RESPONSE FOR DECEMBER 2nd. IN PLAYMETRICS BY THIS SATURDAY NOVEMBER 25th.  Doug will communicate additional details to all attending athletes for the day at the World Cup.
