The Leif Borgeson Award

For Excellence in Freestyle Skiing

River Mentch

This is River Mentch, 2 years ago on top of one of the best lines of my life, (hopefully, that says something).  This was “Super C” in Portillo, Chile in 2018 at 14 k ft. We hiked 2 1/2 hours and skied a 5k vertical foot, 45-degree chute in near perfect conditions. Leif Borgeson, would have loved River.  Enough said.

River Mentch embodies the “freestyle spirit” Leif encouraged Team Summit to pursue when we started our Big Mountain Program.

Daniel had this to say about River:
There was nobody happier to be out on the mountain each and every day, always looking for the "weird" things in skiing and lifr. Leif was a man who dedicated his life and family to the mountains, and River has put himself in the same position.  Whether it's hunting in the fall, rafting in the summer, or skiing in the Winter; River always pursues every activity available to him as long as it means spending more time in the mountains.

Congratulations River!

Leif Borgeson Award For Excellence in Freestyle Skiing

Leif Borgeson was the Snow Safety Director at Arapahoe Basin who passed away Feb. 8th, 2011.
He truly embodied the spirit of the mountain lifestyle. He was an avid skier, biker, boater, patrolman, and sawyer. Leif, put his best effort in all he pursued, he did so with a passion and dedication that inspired others to work and play at his level. His support to Team Summit Colorado was unwavering and forward-thinking as he encouraged us to pursue our Team Summit Big Mountain program. This award is for one Freestyle athlete whose work ethics and competitive results are consistent with excellence, competitive spirit and drive.
